It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Dr. John “Jack” Lyle on Feb. 18, 2024 in Suffolk, Virginia. Born in Portland, Oregon in 1951, Jack enjoyed ice skating at the Lloyd Centre as a young boy. He spent his high school years running cross country at Grant High School when he was not repairing the Lyle brothers’ collection of Fiat cars, which required regular trips to the junkyard. Jack developed an interest in science early and was awarded the high school Physics award. He enrolled at the University of Oregon where he focused his energies on premedical studies as much as one could during the late 1960’s and early 70’s residing in a fraternity-like cooperative, the Campbell Club. He also found time to explore interests such as sculpture, music, and sailing. Most importantly, he started dating the love of his life, Carol, known since childhood, with whom he would share the rest of his journey. He stayed in Portland for medical school and ultimately chose to pursue his passion for head and neck surgery at the University of Virginia. During this time, they welcomed two sons and settled in Suffolk.
Dr. Lyle served the Hampton Roads community as the President of Ear, Nose, and Throat Associates of Tidewater over many years. Members have said he was a lively contributor to the Suffolk Rotary Club. Dr. Lyle was also a long-time member and served as President of the Tri County Medical Society. He enjoyed sailing in the York River with his family and later roaming his Duchal farm acreage near Franklin. A man of many skills, he taught himself to play the bagpipes, which were frequently requested for public events, including his son’s own wedding. Despite fighting dementia in his final years, he will forever be remembered as a great father, an enthusiastic story teller, compassionate physician, and loving husband.
He is predeceased by his parents; James Lyle and Joan Stinnett; and brother, Jerry.
Jack is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Carol; sons, Patrick Lyle (wife Amy), and Dr. Scott Lyle (wife Ngan); granddaughters, Kara and Allison; grandsons, Sean and Thomas; brother, Jim; and sister, Judy.
The family is grateful for the care and support of Dr. and Mrs. Howard Hightower.
Services will be private. Post condolences on parrfuneralhome.com.
