The man convicted of the May 2021 armed robbery of the Bayport Credit Union on University Blvd. has been sentenced to 28 years in prison.
Jayson Newkirk, 39, of Suffolk, was convicted on Sept. 7 on two counts of robbery and two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a robbery and subsequently sentenced on Nov. 27.
According to arrest warrants dated May 5, 2021, Newkirk entered the Bayport Credit Union on May 4 without a face mask — during COVID-19 mask mandates — and according to the warrant, when questioned about not having a face mask on, Newkirk told the teller, “he doesn’t not have a mask, but he has ‘this,’ while pointing a gun in the direction of the teller.” The warrant states Newkirk brandished the firearm at all three tellers.
Newkirk made off with over $3,000 in cash. Newkirk is currently serving his sentence at Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
