Although Suffolk’s high school football teams are finished for the season, one team still has its sights set on a championship.
The Bennett’s Creek Warriors 12U football team is headed to Orlando, Florida, for the Pop Warner Super Bowl tournament from Dec. 1 through Dec. 9., to be played at Camping World Stadium.
The Warriors advanced to the Super Bowl, defeating the NRWF Bulldogs from Raleigh, North Carolina, 32-12.
Head coach Larenta Bullock, who has been coaching in the program for nine years, says this is the first trip to Orlando in many years and is looking forward to the opportunity to bring a Pop Warner trophy back to Suffolk.
“A lot of kids do not get this opportunity,” Bullock said. “So, to me, it’s a big deal. I want the kids to able to see different talent, to compete against some of the best kids in the world.”
The Warriors look to lean on the size and strength of its offensive line.
“I have some great kids,” Bullock said. “I have an offensive line that probably averages at least 200 pounds.”
Bullock says the Bennett’s Creek program offers kids the opportunity to compete at the highest level of youth football and learn the fundamentals that will help them as they continue on to high school and beyond.
“I’m more about teaching kids at the youth level fundamentals. So once they get to high school, that’s one thing their next coaches will not have to touch on because their kids know football fundamentals,” Bullock said.
While the trip will likely be fun for the children, with an event planned for players to have free reign at an amusement park, the trip comes at a cost. Bullock estimates that that cost to be approximately $1,100 per player. The organization held frequent fundraisers to fund the cost and is still accepting donations. Bullock says those wishing to donate can mail a check to BCFA ℅ 12U football to PO Box 5014, Suffolk, Va. 23435, or via CashApp at @CREEKBOYZ2015.
Throughout the week, games will be streamed live on FloSports.
