Election night 2023 saw a tight race for House District 89 as delegate candidates Karen L. Jenkins and Baxter Ennis battled it out for the house seat. From updating result numbers, however, it is Ennis who sees a lead for the finish line.
According to the Virginia Department of Elections official website, Ennis leads the race at 51.17% with a total of 14,514 votes. Jenkins currently sits at 48.56% with a total of 13,773 votes. Ennis says that he is “ecstatic” about the numbers.
“[I] just finished celebrating with a whole group of friends here from Chesapeake and Suffolk, and I am so thankful and so honored to have been given a chance to serve the people of Chesapeake and Suffolk in the 89th District,” Ennis said.
Despite the results, Jenkins says that she was “excited and pleased” about the campaign that she and her team ran.
“We ran a clean race, we didn’t try to put anybody down, and like my husband said, ‘we are true servants, and having a title doesn’t dictate whether we serve or not,” Jenkins said. “I wouldn’t have done anything different, and it’s all about who goes to the polls and vote. We’re still going to serve no matter what, and I am just thankful for the opportunity to run in this type of race. Learned a lot.”
