According to a press release from the City of Suffolk, Suffolk Police and Suffolk Fire and Rescue responded to a report of a bomb threat at Lakeland High School on Monday, Sept. 11, 2023. Emergency Communications was notified of the threat by Suffolk Public School administrators at 10:14 a.m.
“The school was evacuated, and the Suffolk Fire Marshal’s Office, with assistance from Suffolk Police, conducted a sweep of the premises and deemed the building all clear at 11:14 a.m.,” the release said. “Faculty and staff have returned to the building, and school activities have resumed as normal.”
The Suffolk Police Department will have an enhanced presence at the school for the remainder of the day.
In a letter sent to parents and guardians of Lakeland High School students, Principal Lori White urged parents to speak with their children about speaking out when they are aware of any situation that threatens student safety.
“Parents, please continue to discuss with your child the importance of telling a teacher, administrator, or staff member when they know of a situation that could threaten student safety,” White said in the letter. “Keeping our schools safe requires a collaborative effort from all.”
The incident remains under investigation, and there is no further information.
