Access College Foundation recently awarded five $25,000 scholarships to students at several Hampton Roads-based high schools, including one to a Suffolk graduating senior.
Graduating seniors from Manor High School, Landstown High School, Salem High School, Indian River High School and Lakeland High School were surprised with a check for $25,000 from Access College Foundation, foundation officials said in a news release.
Alexis Perkins, who graduated from Lakeland High School, is the sole recipient from Suffolk receiving the $25,000 Anne B. Shumadine Scholarship.
Scholarship selections were selected based on a variety of qualities and achievements by an internal “Beating the Odds” selection committee. All of these graduating seniors have committed to attending a college or university starting in Fall 2023.
Additional scholarships will be awarded to many more students at the upcoming Access Scholarship Awards Ceremony, which will take place later this month.
Since 1988, Access has helped more than 77,000 students from low-income families enroll in a certification or degree program while leveraging $780 million in financial aid and scholarships. Additionally, Access has awarded more than $14 million in Access “Last-Dollar” Scholarships to students, helping to make their educational paths possible.
