Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts is kicking off a creative summer with its Family Fun Day Saturday, June 10.
The free festivities run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside and outside the center, rain or shine. The event is part of Suffolk Centers celebration of 100 years of education and arts at its home in the former historic Suffolk High School.
Family fun abounds with a colorful bounce house, balloon creations, face painting, live music, and free art projects each hour.
Showcasing the Suffolk Center’s talented art instructors, everyone can enjoy creative clay projects with Lisa Morrison from 10-11 a.m. and decorating flower pots from 11 a.m. to noon.
Those in need of something for Father’s Day can join artist Rhona Dawson from noon to 1 p.m. to create a free 8-inch by 10-inch canvas painting for dad.
Those who are looking to “get their groove on” can take part in Alicia Edwards’ free line dance classes that are open to children and adults from 1-2 p.m. in the Suffolk Center’s newly renovated dance studios.
The Family Fun Day features a Summer Artisan Market inside the Taylor Ballroom. Artists feature their one-of-a-kind paintings, candles, upcycled art, jewelry, glass art, soaps, gift baskets and even smoked cheeses.
Take time to purchase an original caricature portrait – a great gift idea for dad.
Family Fun Day is not complete without yummy food and sweet treats. Enjoy Venezuelan Street food from
Gocho Gourmet Food Truck, Hamburgers and hot dogs right off the grill, and Turnip Sprout Restaurant’s soups, salads and sandwiches. Enjoy a slice of centennial celebration cake as you and strike a pose by the center’s amazing LOVEworks created in 2019 by four Suffolk High Schools — Kings Fork High School’s “L.” Lakeland High School’s “O,” Nansemond River High School’s “V” and Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, Upper School’s “E”.
Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts said new musicians, artists, vendors and partners are joining the fun each week. If a group would like to participate, contact Brittany Waller at 757-923-0003.
