Passionate crowd voices its views on rezoning request at Planning Commission

It was a full house Tuesday, March 21 as the city’s Planning Commission meeting for public hearings on rezoning and conditional use permit requests.
The meeting held in council chambers at City Hall saw approvals of recommendations for items such as rezoning and conditional use permit requests for mini-warehouses, and conditional use permits for a utilities electric transformer station for the Holland substation expansion and the establishment of a dog kennel.
The final public hearing on a rezoning request for Lake Kilby Shores to change it from RE-Rural Estate zoning district to RM-Residential Medium Density zoning district on the City of Suffolk official map.
Both developers and Suffolk citizens voiced their opposing views on the request.
The rezoning request won a recommendation for approval with a 5-3 vote, with commissioners MaryEllen Baur, Oliver Creekmore and Mills Staylor voting against approval.
All of the Planning Commision recommendations now move to City Council where they are expected to be considered Wednesday, April 19.
