George Pepper Gatling Jr., 78, passed away on Aug. 31, 2022, at his home. He was the son of the late Jane Harris and George Pepper Gatling. He was predeceased by Dixie, his rescued canine companion. She gave him much joy and they shared many happy hours together.

He was a member of Oxford United Methodist Church and was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation. George took special joy in preparing his clubhouse, The Lee-Jordan Clubhouse, for friends and clubs here in Suffolk.

Survivors include his siblings, Lloyd Gatling and his wife Judy of Gasburg, Mary Jane Black and husband Jerry of Purcellville and Roxane Gilmore, and husband Jim of Richmond; nieces and nephews, Ashley Wood and husband Jason, Erin Miner and husband Trent, Richard Gatling and wife Stephanie, Jay Gilmore and wife Meghan, and Ashton Gilmore and wife Cat; many great grandnieces, great grandnephews and his special neighbors and friends Bill and Dawn Lassiter and Greg Minton.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8, in Cedar Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Richard L. Meiser Jr. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family. Memorial donations may be made to Oxford United Methodist Church, 601 W.
