A heat advisory is in effect from noon to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 28 for Suffolk and most of Southeast Virginia and Tidewater areas.

The National Weather Service’s Wakefield office said Wednesday that heat index values of 105 to 110 degrees is expected. Due to hot temperatures and high humidity, NWS warns it can cause heat

illnesses to occur.

Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. NWS said young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

The advisory stated those who work or spend time outside should take extra precautions.When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. NWS said to know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Residents of the region are encouraged to wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

The advisory also said heat stroke is an emergency and to call 911 if someone is suffering distress from the heat.

The Thursday forecast calls for high temperatures in Suffolk to reach 96 degrees under partly sunny skies, with only a 20% chance of a shower or thunderstorm.
