Lois Umphlett Lawrence, 91, of Suffolk, passed away on Jan. 29, 2022. She was born in Gates County, N.C. and was the daughter of the late Mills Quinton Umphlett and Lucy Eure Umphlett. Lois is predeceased by her brothers, Ralph Umphlett, Milton Umphlett, James Umphlett, Leon Umphlett, Randolph Umphlett; and her sisters, Noreen Taylor, Cordis Dudley and Ruby Rountree.
Lois grew up in a large and loving family with six brothers and six sisters. She was kind, giving and deeply devoted to her family. She was a mother to many, as she loved children and operated a daycare in her home for over 30 years. She enjoyed birdwatching – especially her favorite bluebirds, fishing, sewing, collecting quilts, antiquing, pickling and canning fresh foods, and cooking for her family. Lois especially liked to reminisce about her early life on the farm, her lifetime romance with L.B., and the many adventures she had at Merchants Millpond. She loved her Lord Jesus and served Him faithfully throughout her life.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 72 years, Leck Barton “L.B.” Lawrence Jr., who was the true love of her life; her children, Shirley Freeman (Morris) of Harrellsville, N.C., Doris Richardson (Bob) of Virginia Beach, Joyce Lawrence-Koenig (John – deceased) of Virginia Beach and Leck Barton Lawrence III (Susan) of Suffolk; her grandchildren, Robin, Lee (Travis), Jake and Parke (Jordan), Clayton and Sheldon; her great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Lawrence and Jett Lawrence; her sisters, Marion Spivey, Faye Hoffler and Alta Gray; her brother, M. Q. Umphlett, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would especially like to thank her wonderful caregivers, Alexis, Chrystal, Etienne and Karen for their attentive and loving care.
The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial donations to be made to the charity of your choice. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, Downtown Chapel is serving the family. Condolences may be registered at RWBakerFH.com.
