Refuse truck fire extinguished

Suffolk Fire & Rescue responded early Monday to a fire involving a refuse truck in the 1000 block of University Boulevard.
Emergency Communications was contacted at 7:50 a.m. advising of the fire involving a refuse truck at the rear of the shopping center in that location. Upon arrival, crews found a Waste Management truck with the cab fully involved close to the rear of the building. The driver was able to safely exit the vehicle and was not injured.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire.
Responding units included Battalion 2, Safety 1, EMS-2, Engines 5, 9, 10, and 25; Ladders 5 and 6, Medic 5, and FM 4 and 6. Mutual Aid was provided by the Chesapeake Fire Department.
The Fire Marshal’s Office will be handling the investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
