Like many nonprofit organizations locally, one recently had to cancel its main fundraiser for the second year in a row, and we would urge everyone who is able to help support this important organization.
The Suffolk Unit of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Virginia canceled its barbecue and oyster roast, initially scheduled for Oct. 2, over concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
While the cancellation of the event is certainly disappointing for many, there is still much support for the club, according to Rebecca S. Myers, resource development coordinator. There are other opportunities for people who wish to support the development of local young people.
The Suffolk Unit of the Boys & Girls Club, as part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Virginia, is striving to provide members with programs in five core areas, according to the regional organization’s website: character and leadership development; health and life skills; the arts; sports, fitness and recreation; and education and career. Together, these areas encompass three priority outcomes: academic success, good character and leadership, and healthy lifestyles.
These outcomes, we believe, are among the most important for young people to develop. Young people who are of good character, who can be leaders in at least one part of their lives or careers, who have the academic skills necessary for the 21st century, and have the knowledge and resources necessary to help themselves and their families maintain good mental and physical health, have everything they need to be successful in the future.
The Boys & Girls Club provides a safe place to go after school and during the summers, adult mentors, fun and friendship and youth development programs.
