To the editor:
My name is Tyshia Marshall, and I have a student in Suffolk Public Schools.
I’m concerned about the current reputation of Suffolk Public Schools. I’m concerned that if it doesn’t improve soon, our children will continue to fall further behind. As we approach the upcoming election, I’ve given careful thought to who would be the best representative for Sleepy Hole Borough.
I’ve researched both candidates, and I believe the best candidate for SPS is Ebony Wright. The board is already stacked with educators and could use someone with a different skill set — someone who can make a huge impact in policy and governance and will speak truth to power.
My greatest concern is that the person elected has experience as a parent with children in SPS. It is difficult to be an effective advocate for something you haven’t experienced.
Ebony Wright has had children in Suffolk Public Schools, specifically in Sleepy Hole Borough. From Creekside to John Yeates and Nansemond River High School, she knows the strengths and weaknesses of our schools. Mrs. Wright continues to support the students and families in the community through her scholarship foundation. She has devoted the last eight years fundraising to help families bridge the financial gap to attend college. Her foundation has awarded over $68,000 to students and families in SPS. She has already proven that she is passionate about education and will work hard for our students.
Mrs. Wright appears to be the most experienced candidate by far. She has a heart for our children and a strong background in leadership, management, accountability and transparency.
Lastly, she is a Navy veteran with a proven track record of honor, courage and commitment, all qualities this board could use.
If we want someone to improve our schools, Ebony Wright is the answer.
