Mr. Alfred Wardell Barnes, of 1056 Centerbooke Lane, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, Sept. 4, 2021, at the age of 77. He was surrounded by the warmth of his beloved Brenda Y. Diggs.

Alfred was born in Suffolk on Oct. 10, 1943, to the late Alice M. Horner Barnes and Leslie Barnes. He leaves to cherish his loving memory, his daughter, Adrienne Hill; a grandson, Myles Hill; two brothers, William and Bennie Barnes; sisters-in-law, Shirley Wilkins Barnes and Brenda Barnes Pitt; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family. He was predeceased by his sister, Almeta Barnes Smith; his brothers, Leslie Barnes and Randy Barnes, and a brother-in-law, Reginald “Reggie” Smith.

Alfred retired from Kraft Foods (Planters Peanuts) many years ago, where he worked as a machine operator. He was a Vietnam veteran, serving the U.S. Army branch of the military, a member of the Suffolk Boosters Club and a faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church.

The family extends a very special thank you to Brenda Y. Diggs and others who help provide the time, attention and loving support he needed during his illness. Much love and blessings to you all. There will be a viewing service from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, at Harris Funeral Home. Memorial and burial services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road.
