Suffolk City Council voted unanimously to appoint William E. Hutchings Jr. as city attorney effective July 1, removing the interim title from his position.

Hutchings was appointed interim city attorney March 4 after previous city attorney Helivi Holland, who had served in that position since 2012, was appointed Feb. 23 by the General Assembly to serve as a judge for the Fifth Judicial District. Hutchings’ salary will be $180,250, and he will have a monthly automobile allowance of $500.

Hutchings began his tenure in Suffolk in 2006 as an assistant city attorney, and was appointed deputy city attorney in 2010. Before joining the city, he had been in private practice and represented clients in Fairfax County and Washington, D.C.

He received a Bachelor of Science in political science from Old Dominion University in 1995 and a Juris Doctor degree from the George Washington University Law School in 2002.

“Congratulations to you and your family for what you’re getting ready to do and what you have been doing,” said Councilman Roger Fawcett following the June 16 vote.
