A first-time Suffolk author has published her book, which highlights real struggles while in a fictional story.

Tiffany Hurdle’s new book, “When Addison Said Goodbye,” is a 78-page book in the realistic and medical fiction genres that explores the journey of a 15-year-old girl who finds out she is pregnant. This main character defeats many odds even though she cannot deny the reality of illness and death.

“The book teaches us to regain triumph and determination in our lives, to stop judging people, to help educate and find cures for rare illnesses such as adrenal insufficiency and to live each day like it’s the last but in a loving and responsible manner,” said Hurdle.

Hurdle grew up in Chesapeake but moved to Suffolk to teach at Mount Zion Elementary School when it was still open. She still lives in Suffolk with her five sons and is now an insurance agent.

She wrote the book initially in May 2012 after attending a book party for another author and was inspired to try her hand at realistic fiction, as writing had always been an outlet she enjoyed.

“I read her book, and it was just so real,” said Hurdle. “I needed something to do, so I wrote it. I also had a story to share.”

The book was finally published in November of 2020 by Dorrance Publishing. This came when Hurdle felt like she was in a good place financially, and she thought it was good timing with more people at home needing something to read.

“It was amazing to see the final product and work with the publisher through the process,” said Hurdle. “They really listened to what I wanted and took action to make it happen.”

This book deals with serious topics as it brings light to adrenal insufficiency, also known as Addison’s disease, a lifelong disease with no known cure. As an insurance agent, Hurdle advocates for the importance of having life insurance for children as well as other ages. This topic is close to home for Hurdle, as she has loved ones fighting their own daily battle with autoimmune diseases.

“It’s a very quick read and captivating,” said Hurdle. “It will benefit anyone who reads it. It’s not for a particular group of people; I think it can inspire everyone.”

Her book is available on Amazon, the Kindle Store and at Dorrance Publishing.
