Local sororities and fraternities are passing out school supplies to help with the unusual school year.

A drive-by supply giveaway is taking place from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 24, at East Suffolk Recreation Center, 138 S. Sixth St. This will allow families who are doing virtual learning through Suffolk Public Schools to receive much-needed supplies to have a successful school year.

This event is hosted by the Suffolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Each year, the local chapter conducts projects designed to address the community’s considerations about education. Usually, the members go into the schools to deliver the supplies. Due to COVID-19, the Delta Chapter is giving away supplies in a different format as a drive-through for the Suffolk Public School students.

“With educational development being one of the Sorority’s Five Point Programmatic Thrusts, Suffolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. recognizes that there is a need in the Suffolk community to help our youth to be able to reach their highest potential,” said the chapter’s corresponding secretary, Kimberly Vincent.

The supplies include earbuds, scissors, composition books, glue sticks, pencils, pens, erasers, dry erase boards, markers, dry erase markers, crayons, colored pencils, loose-leaf paper, highlighters, index cards, folders and drawstring bags. The giveaway is first-come, first-served.

Helping with this event are other sororities and fraternities, including Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. Epsilon Theta Zeta Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Zeta Epsilon Omega Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. Alpha Iota Chapter, and Epsilon Iota Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.

To follow the COVID-19 safety guidelines, those who drive through must remain in the vehicle at all times, and the driver should wear a mask. Students must attend Suffolk Public Schools and be present in the car as well.
