On May 25, 2020, William Victor “Bill” Garretson III left his earthly family to reunite with his heavenly family. He was the son of William Victory Garrettson and Valvina Eugenia Rodriguez Garrettson, and grandson of Alma Rodriguez of the Bronx.
After graduating from the prestigious High School of Art and Design in New York City, Bill joined the U.S. Marine Corps and saw distinguished service in Vietnam, earning various medals, and also was in the Marine Corp Reserves.
Originally from the Bronx, N.Y., Bill spent his final days with his son, William Victor “Billy” Garretson IV, in Newport News. In addition, he leaves his daughter, Zelaya James; grandchildren, Tycel and Rozalyn James, of New York; his former wife, Joyce E. Pugh Garretson (Ms. G.) of Suffolk; grandson, Charles Benjamin Brown; granddaughter, Tamaura Burney; great-grandson, Chance Benjamin Brown, of the Bronx; as well as numerous Garretson/Rodriguez cousins, in-laws and friends.
Bill’s cremains will be placed in Columbarium No. 7 at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, at 9 a.m. Monday, June 22, 2020.
