The Lakeland High School girls’ basketball team took down Lafayette High School to advance in regionals.

The No. 3 seeded Lady Cavs dominated Lafayette at home Wednesday with a 63-30 win. It was an impressive win for the Lady Cavs, and their first with such a young group. Lakeland had three players in double figures, with Jaelyn Brown leading the way with 15 points. Kianna Gray added 13, and Jamauri Demiel scored 10.

Coach Daryl Rountree was confident in the way the Lady Cavs played.

“They were aggressive out there, and we played some good team ball,” Rountree said. “I think them being in this moment was exciting for them, going to the playoffs for the first time, and they know what’s at stake.”

Lakeland has an advantage that very few teams in their region have, and that’s the fact they get to play in the Southeastern District against some strong competition. Rountree feels that has helped prepare them for where they are now in the season.

“Night in and night out, you are playing against tough opponents that really get you ready for the playoffs,” Rountree said. “We just have to continue building on what we are doing and continue to build and get better.”

Lakeland’s next game will be the region semifinals. They will face Park View High School at the Norfolk Scope at 3 p.m. Saturday.
