The Nansemond River High School wrestling team earned themselves another Class 5A region championship.
The Warriors wrestled in the Class 5A region tournament over the weekend and came home with another region championship. It was a strong day for Nansemond River wrestling, as they were one of the teams favored to win the region.
Nansemond River had five region champions as Owen Rawls, Evan Rawls, Braxton Lewis, Andrew McDougal and Matthew Henson each took home a title. Coach James Tripp Seed felt good about the way the Warriors wrestled.
“I thought we had a pretty good chance of winning it,” Seed said. “We qualified nine guys for the state, which was a goal of ours.”
With the region realignment bringing a few former Class 6A schools coming down to 5A, it made the task that much more difficult for the Warriors. Matt Prevatte had a nice finish for the Warriors, coming in as a runner-up. Madsen Jean finished third, while Michael Fields and Garrison Champigny placed fourth. Alex Cardona and Kishawn Creque finish fifth.
“There were a lot of good teams added to our region,” Seed said. “We can only control who’s in front of us, and that’s how we approached everything. We just wanted to focus on what we wanted to focus on.”
Nansemond River will head to Ashburn to compete in the state tournament. As far as preparation goes for the week, the Warriors will continue to attack the week like normal before traveling on Thursday. The Warriors have a big opportunity in front of them, and they feel good about their chances. Lewis will return to the tournament this season as the reigning state champion in his class.
