Senior King’s Fork High School offensive lineman DeVaughn Orr has committed to Hampton University.
Hampton will be adding another Bulldog to its athletics in the fall of 2020. Orr was a highly touted offensive lineman who earned offers from the likes of Coastal Carolina University, Hampton and Virginia State University. He went with Hampton, citing his relationship he had built with the program since his junior year.
“My recruiting process was great, and I truly met a lot of great people,” Orr said. “The part that really stood out to me from Hampton was that they felt like a family. They showed me love since my junior year and always stayed in contact.”
He had other interest from other schools like Norfolk State University and University of Connecticut, who he held in high regard, but ultimately felt like Hampton was the best fit. Hampton wants to bring Orr in and help him put on more weight, and from there Orr believes the sky is the limit for how successful he can be for the Pirates.
Orr admitted that he weighed how close he wanted to be to home in his college decision, which also made Hampton a good fit. Orr’s father played college football at East Carolina, which shows the football pedigree he has.
“It has always been a goal of mine to play college football,” Orr said. “Just wanted to work hard throughout my high school career and see what level was best for me to play at when it is all over.”
There are some familiar Suffolk faces at Hampton right now, with former King’s Fork standout Darran Butts being there as well as Jay’ree Hardy. Orr knows the familiarity he has with a few guys on the team will help him get settled in.
For his senior season at King’s Fork, Orr finished as an All-District and All-Region offensive lineman and helped the Bulldogs finish with a 4-8 record, which included one playoff win. Orr had hoped for his senior season to include more wins but said he learned a lot playing for King’s Fork.
He will major in kinesiology.
