The first 2020 baby delivered at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk has her dad’s eyes, her mom’s lips and a bright pink blanket to keep her warm.
Cadence Joann Everett was born at 3:50 p.m. Wednesday in Sentara Obici Hospital, weighing 9 pounds and 13 ounces. Cadence’s mother and father are Franklin residents Launya Michie, 22, and Cedric Everett, 22.
Michie and Everett are high school sweethearts that have been dating since March 2013. When they talked about growing old together and starting a family, they agreed on the name “Cadence,” if their first child was a girl.
Years passed but the name stuck around — all the way to their first child on New Year’s Day 2020.
“It’s crazy how true that came out,” Michie said.
She said her motherly instincts came out naturally after Cadence was born, and added that her daughter is going to have all the support she’ll need as she grows up — including their parents, cousins, uncles, friends and siblings, many of which were right there for Michie and Everett at the hospital.
“When I came in from my C-section, the room was filled with family and friends. It was pretty amazing, actually,” she said.
Everett has kept close to his high school sweetheart at the hospital, and to their newborn daughter. It’s been an amazing whirlwind for the couple as they’ve been taking care of Cadence, holding her close and watching her sleep.
“She’s definitely a daddy’s girl. She fell asleep in his arms for three hours,” Michie said about Cadence and Everett. In addition to their eyes, the two share the name initials: Cadence Joann Everett and Cedric Jamaal Everett.
Looking at his newborn on Thursday, Everett could imagine a life of firsts for Cadence — her first walk, her first talk, her first “leave me alone, Mom,” as Michie said.
“I definitely feel like I’ve never done something right in my entire life, until her,” Everett said, looking at Cadence. “It’s the most miraculous thing I’ve ever done.”
“Just seeing you being a dad, it’s amazing,” Michie said back.
