Winter clothes for Suffolk needy

Suffolk Christian Church on North Main Street will hold its “Coats for the Community” coat distribution on Jan. 4 and 6 for children and adults that are in need this winter.
The distribution includes coats, scarves, hats, gloves, sweaters, and lightweight jackets for all ages. This distribution is performed by the Coats for the Community ministry, according to Carman Goben, a member of Suffolk Christian Church.
Flyers are provided during the church’s weekly food pantry ministry on Tuesdays, and teachers in local schools are encouraged to come in to get coats for any of their students who may need one, Goben wrote in an email.
The project first began with the Suffolk Christian Church Adult Sunday School class to provide coats to needy children. Suffolk Christian Church first partnered with the Salvation Army in 1990 to provide coats to children, and adults were later included in the coat distribution as the mission grew, Goben wrote.
The project has now become a church-wide effort, with two different dates scheduled to reach more people.
“The community mission is supported by other local churches and schools with donations of coats, sweaters, scarves, hats, gloves and money,” Goben wrote. “The purpose is to share the love of Christ by supporting those in need within our community.”
“Coats for the Community” will be held at Suffolk Christian Church, located at 216 N. Main St. The coat distribution will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Jan. 4 and from 2 to 4 p.m. Jan. 6.
