Suffolk Crime Line recognized local students and law enforcement at the annual School Crime Stoppers and Police Officer Recognition event, held Wednesday at Liberty Spring Christian Church on Whaleyville Boulevard.
The purpose of the event is to recognize the students for their hard work in this organization, and to honor outstanding Suffolk police.
“We’re just thanking the students for keeping their schools safe, and at the same time recognizing the officers that have been nominated for the quarter or year,” said Suffolk Crime Line President Cathy Richards.
Four awards were given at the ceremony to officers of the quarter, and another for the officer of the year. The four Officer of the Quarter award recipients were Officers Corey Hubbard, Haley Brock, Zachary Hyman and Detective Chris Scherer. Officer Kyle Valois was recognized as Officer of the Year.
Public high schools and middle schools in Suffolk had representatives who talked about the activities at their schools for the year.
Students engage in activities with Suffolk police officers during the school year, Richards said, and they are also active volunteers in other areas of the community, such as nursing homes.
“It’s all sorts of community related events,” Richards said. “They’re very active students.”
