Suffolk United Inc. will hold its annual Thanksgiving food giveaway Saturday, with enough items to allow more than 500 families to cook their own hearty dinners.

The giveaway will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Lake Meade Park, 201 Holly Lawn Parkway, behind the Kroger grocery store on North Main Street. This free food giveaway will be on a first-come, first-served basis and is open to anyone. The event will take place rain-or-shine.

More than 35 churches are participating in this year’s event, which is also supported by donations from Crocker Funeral Home, California Cartage Company and the Suffolk Ruritan Club, according to Bishop A.S. Hall Sr., president of Suffolk United Inc.

The slogan for this year’s giveaway is that “everyone should have a great Thanksgiving.”

“Local churches and businesses have come together to feed the community,” Hall said, with a wide menagerie of Thanksgiving essentials. Turkeys, sweet potatoes, stuffing and more tasty sides, plus paper towels, paper plates, paper cups and plastic utensils will be among the things to be given away. “We will supply everything that it takes to provide a thanksgiving meal for over 500 families.”
