Suffolk high school football had a strong last week, as three of four teams all secured victories. In the latest Virginia High School League and Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association weekly rankings, and three of the four Suffolk schools remain in the hunt.
In the VHSL rankings, Nansemond River High School remains sixth in the Class 5 Region A rankings. Nansemond River earned a 50-0 win over Lakeland High School, which puts them at 6-2 on the year. With a loaded region filled with teams with strong records, the Warriors likely will need a little help to continue to move up in the rankings. The top eight in the region get into the playoffs, and Coach Justin Conyers has stated that the Warriors are already in playoff mode for the final two games of the regular season.
King’s Fork High School had dropped out of the top six but is now back in the sixth spot with a win over Hickory High School last weekend. It was much needed for a Bulldogs team that can still finish with a .500 record if they win out. Coach Kermit Buggs has stated the past two weeks the Bulldogs want to secure themselves a spot.
Lakeland remains winless, and in the bottom half of the Class 3 Region A.
In the VISAA ranking, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy comes in at sixth in the Division II rankings. Only the top four teams make the playoffs, but it’s not based solely on records, as the top four teams are picked by a coaches’ association. With the Saints’ strong schedule, and wins against teams ahead of them, they have an outside chance to get in. If they win their final regular-season game this Friday, they will finish with a 5-5 record.
Coach Mike Biehl mentioned that the Saints know what’s at stake and the implications for the postseason with their final game. However, the Saints are just focused on going out there and trying to go 1-0 this week.
