The Lakeland High School football team dropped to 0-4 after a home loss to Grassfield High School.
Lakeland goes to 0-4 on the season after a home 34-6 loss to Grassfield. Grassfield got off to a fast start, leaving Lakeland scoreless as they went up 14-0. Lakeland was unable to get much going offensively even Grassfield capitalized on opportunities.
“We didn’t perform as well as we would have liked to,” Coach Joe Jones said. “We are going continue to put our head down and keep working. That’s all we can do.”
Despite the slow start, Jones is still confident in his group. Being the smallest school in the Southeastern District, Lakeland knew what they were going up against this season. At times over these first few games, Lakeland has shown a lot of potential and promise, but because of the youth they have, they have been learning in a lot of these situations they are facing on the field.
“It can kind of get a little straining on the young guys,” Jones said. “But they are learning they are working, and I let them know just to stay positive we just have to keep working at it. We’ll get there.”
Offensively, Lakeland has scored a combined 12 points in the last three games. Part of that is because the offensive players are all first-year starters, so it’s going to take time for them to gel and put it all together. The more reps and experience the offense gets, the better it will be.
Lakeland will try to look for its first win of the season against Deep Creek High School on the road, which will be another tough matchup for the young Cavs this Friday night.
