The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy cross country team took home a win in a cross country meet Wednesday afternoon hosted by Catholic High School.
The teams competed at Mt. Trashmore. The girls’ team took first place, as they had three runners finish within the top 15. Julie Williamson finished third and Abby Conrod finished fourth. Emma Conrod finished 15th. The meet featured six Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools teams and Isle of Wight Academy.
With only one senior on the team on the girls’ side, Coach Karen Norman is excited about the potential of this season for NSA.
“We are excited about our season,” Norman said. “We return the same top seven runners this year. With only one senior on the team, we will have several more years where they will continue to gain experience, strength and speed.”
Norman believes that once everyone is in race shape, NSA is strong enough to have different leaders every week during different meets. Williamson returns as the top runner. She was the conference champion last season. However, Conrod sisters Abby and Emma have made strides from last season. Domino Borrell, Frances Hope, Camryn King and Berkley Puzey are all coming on strong.
The Saints boys’ team placed fifth during the meet. Jacob Conrod finished second overall in the meet and Hayden Waters finished 15th overall. Waters and Conrod are set to lead the way for the boys’ team this season along with Jack Hutchinson and Holden Byrne.
