In its opening game of the season, the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy field hockey team shut out Southampton at home Wednesday.

Five different Lady Saints (1-0) got on the scoreboard, with Cami Stambaugh leading the way with two goals.

“The girls competed well,” NSA coach Shelby Bourn said. “We started off a little slow, but we started to put it all together, and we were able to (get) everybody involved and get everybody some time.”

NSA is coming off a 6-8-1 season a year ago. The Lady Saints graduated four seniors off of that team who were solid contributors, and even though the Lady Saints are younger this season, it will make them to rely on each other more, something Bourn is looking for from this group.

“I think we’ll have a different way we play than we did last year, and I’m looking forward to that,” Bourn said. “We’re still figuring things out on where we are going to play people at different positions, but I’m excited about what we have going into this season.”

Because some of the positions aren’t settled on the field yet, Bourn wants to take the first couple of games of the season to see where some of her best players fit.
