Junior Sam Wolfe got his first hole-in-one and notched a career-best score in the last week for Nansemond River High School golf.
The Nansemond River High School golf team reeled in three straights win, grabbing wins over Oscar Smith High School, Lakeland High School and Deep Creek High School.
In the matchup with Oscar Smith last Wednesday, Nansemond River had a team score of 357 at Sleepy Hole Golf Course. On the 16th hole during that match, Wolfe knocked in an ace with a 9-iron that went for 140 yards. It was the first hole-in-one of Wolfe’s career.
“It felt awesome,” Wolfe said. “It was my first hole-in-one, and to do it in high school makes it all that much better.”
“It was definitely the highlight of the match,” Warriors Coach Brandon Frye said. “It’s a young team, and they are continuing to learn, and we’ll keep getting better and better.”
Wolfe felt it was a confidence booster for him, as he went on to medal in the next match with Lakeland Thursday afternoon, tying with teammate Trenton McMillen for the honor.
Then on Monday against Deep Creek, Wolfe shot a 73, his career best and good enough for the medalist honor once again.
With three consecutive wins, one over rival Lakeland, they are halfway to regaining the annual city title, which they missed out on for the first time a while last year.
“It’s not something we want to directly dial in on,” Frye said of the city title. “It’d be great if we can do it, but it’ll take care of itself. We just want to go out there and play like we are capable of. The kids look forward to it.”
Through the first couple of matches, Frye believes that the team already has multiple qualifiers for the regional tournament. It’s a big step up in the progression of the players from last season, when Nansemond River didn’t have any qualify for the region tournament.
“The main goal is the whole team making it to regionals, and we feel good about the direction we are headed in,” Frye said. “We have a couple of players we think have qualified, which was more than we had last season. So, we are looking forward to continuing to get better and continuing to play better.”
The Warriors will be facing Indian River High School next Monday.
