NSA to host football camp

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy football program will host a skills camp as well as a Football 101 course for adults.
Children ages 6-13 will get a chance to come out to NSA on Aug. 10 and strengthen their skills as they learn from NSA Coach Mike Biehl as well as players from the team. NSA has also added a Football 101 course they will use to teach adults about the basics of football.
“We want parents to feel comfortable coming to our camps and learning the basics of our game,” Biehl said. “So, they are sitting there and watching their kids play, and they are understanding a little bit more of what they are watching. So, we want to break down rules and certain situations on the field.”
Biehl believes parents watching their kids compete may not always know exactly what is going on, because there is so much happening on the field. The Saints staff wants parents to know the basics of what’s going on, whether their team is on offense or defense.
The biggest thing at the camp for the kids is making sure they are learning how to play the game the right way. Biehl wants to make sure his potential future players are running drills well and understand how the drills will help them play the game.
“You really want to understand what you get out of each drill and making sure that you’re doing it properly,” Biehl said. “We are going to keep it fun and keep everybody active and engaged. We want to make it easy for them to get every single thing we are asking them to do.”
Biehl is entering his fourth season in the NSA football program. He helped NSA to a winning record and a playoff berth last year.
No equipment will be required, but participants should wear cleats or tennis shoes. The camp will be from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 10 at the Arthur E. Jones Athletic Field at NSA. Admission is $20 per child or Football 101 attendee, or a joint rate of $30 a child/Football 101 attendee. All proceeds go to the NSA football program.
