There’s good news for Hampton Roads drivers heading into Memorial Day weekend, as gas prices continue to remain lower than last year across Virginia, AAA Tidewater Virginia announced on Tuesday.

The average price for a gallon of gasoline on Tuesday was $2.59, which was 14 cents less than last year and a two-cent decrease from the previous week, according to the Tuesday press release.

Hampton Roads has also been experiencing cheaper prices at the pumps. The average price at pumps in Hampton Roads on Tuesday was $2.60, which was 18 cents lower than last year.

“Gas prices are getting cheaper for many motorists, even though U.S. gasoline stocks sit at a 7 million (barrel) deficit year-over-year,” AAA Tidewater spokeswoman Georjeane Blumling stated in the press release. “Crude oil prices have remained relatively stable the past few months, which is one reason helping gas prices be cheaper than last year at this time.”

Gasbuddy.com on Thursday afternoon recorded regular gas prices at Suffolk pumps that ranged from $2.47 to $2.69, which is a slight dip compared to the $2.52-to-$2.69 range that was recorded on May 14.
