The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy boys lacrosse team came in at No. 3 in the most recent Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II state poll.
As the Saints prepare for the VISAA Division II state the Saints are likely to have a top four seed. For the last couple of seasons, the Saints finished among the final four in the state come tournament time. Coach T.W. Johnson feels good about where the team is at this point in the season.
“I believe our team is starting to play better by the week and I feel like our best lacrosse is still in front of us,” Johnson said. “I don’t think the players or coaches believe we have played our best game yet. It will be important to stay in the moment and focus on being fundamentally sound while executing at a high level.”
Even though the Saints will be entering the final week of the season next week Johnson believes that team growth is still important. Players have taken the next step over the last couple of weeks, but the Saints know continuing to progress as well as coaches and players being ready to make the right adjustments during the postseason will be key as well.
Each year the Saints faces changes have lost some talented seniors the past couple of years. However, Johnson mentions that it changes nothing in terms of philosophies for the Saints. There might be a little adjusting here and there, but the Saints feel they can win a title as long as they continue to play hard and consistent.
The state tournament will start next Tuesday for the Saints with their opponents to be determined.
