The 11th annual “Shake, Rattle & Roll” spring car show will cruise back onto Main Street in historic downtown Suffolk Saturday. This show will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and admission is free for spectators.
Participating vehicles will arrive between 7:30 and 9:45 a.m. before the show officially opens at 10 a.m. DJ Angie will be playing music and making announcements, and awards for the car show will be announced at 2 p.m.
There are 140 vehicles registered as of Monday, according to Suffolk Tourism Development Manager Theresa Earles. All participating vehicles must be pre-1979, and a vast range of makes and models will be showcased, including Mustangs, Dusters, Novas, Chevelles, Bel Airs, Roadsters, Road Runners and many others.
Suffolk Tourism will also collect names and information of former racers who rode on the old Suffolk Raceway track at the Suffolk Executive Airport. Photos, photo copies, news clippings and memorabilia will also be accepted. These will be incorporated into a permanent raceway exhibit at the Suffolk Visitor Center, Earles wrote in an email.
“This car show offers a nostalgic walk down memory lane, so to speak,” Earles wrote. “The classic cars and trucks provide a rainbow of colors on Suffolk’s historic Main Street and fill the street with families and auto enthusiasts.
“Visitors can choose to grab a bite to eat from the show’s food vendor, Suffolk BBQ, or they can stop by one of downtown’s several unique eateries.”
The deadline to register for the car show is Friday, at the VIP reception that will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at Suffolk BBQ at The Airport, 1200 Gene Bolton Drive.
Anyone interested in registering their pre-1979 vehicle or in submitting a piece for the Suffolk Raceway collection should call the Suffolk Visitor Center at 514-4130. Go online to visitsuffolkva.com for more information on the car show.
