There’s a slew of volunteer opportunities this weekend for anyone in Suffolk that’s looking for volunteer hours — or who just wants to help beautify their city.
Keep Suffolk Beautiful has cleanup, maintenance and beautification projects planned for Friday and Saturday in support of the Great American Cleanup, the largest grassroots community program nationwide.
The following Saturday events are perfect for those looking to earn volunteer community service hours:
- Tree planting from 9 a.m. to noon at Bennett’s Creek Park, 3000 Bennetts Creek Park Road. Volunteers will meet by the children’s playground at the park.
- Shoreline maintenance from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Sleepy Hole Park, 4616 Sleepy Hole Road. Volunteers will meet by the fishing pier to weed, mulch and prune with the Nansemond River Preservation Alliance.
- Cleanup of East Washington Street from 9 to 11 a.m. Volunteers will meet at the East Suffolk Recreation Center parking lot, 138 S. Sixth St.
- Cleanup of West Washington Street from 9 to 11 a.m. Volunteers will meet in the Morgan Memorial Library parking lot, 443 W. Washington St.
There are even more projects set for Friday that need the support of local volunteers, plus local organizations and businesses:
- Cleanup of Portsmouth Boulevard from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet in the Planet Fitness parking lot, 569 E. Constance Road.
- Community garden improvements from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet at the garden at the East Suffolk Recreation Center, 138 S. Sixth St.
- Tree planting at Lake Meade Park and cleanup of Holly Lawn Cemetery from 9 to 11 a.m. Volunteers will meet in the dog park parking lot, 201 Holly Lawn Parkway.
Volunteers will receive all the equipment they will need to make a difference. These projects can’t succeed without their support, and on top of that, they’re all great chances to enjoy the outdoors this weekend.
