Noah Boone threw a no-hitter in the Lakeland High School baseball team’s win over Hopewell High School.
Lakeland picked up its second win of the season last Friday when it took down Hopewell 2-0. The Cavs got the win behind a no-hitter performance from sophomore Noah Boone on the mound. He pitched a complete game, striking out eight.
“That was big for him,” Coach David Devers said. “He pitched well, and he was in command and in control. For such a young player with this being his first year of varsity, that was big time. It’s a big boost to his confidence, and it’s helping him in the right way.”
Demonta Hawkins went 2-4. Boone went 1-3 with an RBI, while Carlin Walden went 1-3 with an RBI and a double.
The Cavs played the day before and took a 19-1 loss to Great Bridge High School, so Devers felt it was good for the team to put that behind them and bounce back. Six games into the season, Lakeland has already surpassed its win total from last season. Devers believes the team is identifying its mistakes and fixing them accordingly.
“It was good to rebound from the Thursday game, where we didn’t play well,” he said. “The kids came out and played hard and did a good job correcting some mistakes we made from the day before. I feel really good about where we are. The kids are buying in, and they are working hard.”
With the team feeling like things are trending in the right direction on a week-to-week basis, Devers is excited about the team’s potential.
“We are at a point where we could easily be 4-2,” Devers said. “They are getting more and more confident, and it’s really helping us out. We are getting better every time we step on the field, and that’s good to see.”
Lakeland will host rival Nansemond River High School Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. if the weather allows it.
