Volunteers wanted for Saturday cleanup downtown

Keep Suffolk Beautiful is asking for volunteers for a Nansemond River cleanup that’s set for Saturday in downtown Suffolk.
This cleanup will be in partnership with the Nansemond River Preservation Alliance and Izaak Walton League. NRPA and Izaak Walton League volunteers will pick up trash and debris on the river banks in downtown Suffolk and also scour the waters in their canoes and kayaks.
While the river and its banks are covered for Saturday, volunteers are still needed to pick up litter on the roads around the Hilton Garden Inn Suffolk Riverfront hotel on East Constance Road, starting at Constant’s Wharf Park and Marina behind the hotel.
“If anyone wants to, they can come to Constant’s Wharf,” said Wayne Jones of Suffolk Litter Control and Keep Suffolk Beautiful. “We need help on land, too.”
The cleanup will be from 9 a.m. to noon with registration starting at 8:45 a.m. at Constant’s Wharf Park and Marina, 100 E. Constance Road. No advance registration is required, and volunteers can arrive at any time to assist during the three-hour block — although the sooner, the better.
Grabbers, garbage bags, gloves and safety vests will be provided. Volunteers will split into groups to collect trash on East Constance Road, North Main Street and further downtown.
Those that want to register in advance or have questions can email littercontrol@suffolkva.us or call 514-7604.
