The Saints baseball team picked up its third win of the season Wednesday evening against Windsor High School.
A late run in the sixth inning helped Nansemond-Suffolk Academy improve to 3-1. Both teams went cold through the first three innings. Windsor got on the board first in the fourth inning, going up 1-0, before NSA answered back with a run of its own in the fifth inning.
In the sixth inning, NSA brought in six runs, giving them a 7-1 lead that ultimately sealed the win for them.
Coach Joey Seal admitted that the game was sloppy for a Saints performance but liked how his team was able to fight through it.
“You don’t get a certain amount points for a pretty win or an ugly win. A win is a win,” Seal said. “We started off rough. I’m proud of the guys for sticking with it, and we were able to break through.”
Hyatt Hurst and Will Rice led the Saints with two hits each Wednesday. Hurst added a double, and Zac Morris added a triple. Morris and Rice stole two bases each as well. Iziah Turner got the win on the mound, pitching six innings, striking out seven and allowing one hit. The Saints are improving each game and are looking forward to putting more complete games together.
“I like where we are trending, but it’s some things we can control that we can clean up,” Seal said. “I think the guys are really motivated to be better, and competition among ourselves will make us all better.”
