Grayson signs with Chiefs

Former Suffolk standout Davon Grayson has signed a futures contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Grayson, a King’s Fork High School alumnus, will get a second opportunity with the Kansas City Chiefs. In May 2018, Grayson signed with the Chiefs but was ultimately released. With this new opportunity, he gets a chance to participate in offseason workouts with the Chiefs as well as possibly compete in training camp. A futures contract is a team claiming the rights to a player for the following season.

Around this time last year, Grayson was going through the 2018 NFL Draft process. Coming out of East Carolina University, he worked out at the NFL Combine in March and proceeded to take visits to different organizations.

When the draft came around in late April, Grayson wasn’t drafted but signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent. An injury two weeks after he was signed ended his stint in Kansas City, as they waived him with an injury settlement.

During the draft process last season, Grayson said the Chiefs specifically expressed interest in him. Now, he will get the opportunity to go through a full NFL offseason without having to go through the draft process or get a late start because of the draft. He can jump right in.

“I have talked to the Chiefs. They explained everything to me, from the quarterback situation that they’ve got going on, that they’ve identified a specific type of offensive skill set that they want to add to the team. They told me I fit the bill. Hopefully, they’ll give me an opportunity.” Grayson said to a chiefswire.com reporter.

Grayson will compete for a roster spot on a Chiefs team that recently reached the AFC Championship game. On different betting sites, they are widely favorited to reach the Super Bowl in the AFC for the upcoming season. If Grayson is able to be a part of that, whether on the active roster or practice squad, that would fulfill a lifelong dream for him.

At ECU, Grayson is among the top receivers ever to play at the school in terms of rankings. He finished fifth all-time in receiving yards with 1,767, eighth in receptions with 135 and ninth in touchdowns with 13. He had a career-high 223 receiving yards in one game during his senior season. During his senior season, he was also a part of the Biletnikoff Award Watch List compiled of the top wide receivers in the college football.

In his time at King’s Fork, he was an All-District selection on both offense and defense. In his senior season, he helped King’s Fork to its best record at the time and a playoff appearance.
