The Suffolk Christian Academy girls’ basketball team finished the regular season with a win and now is ready to continue the momentum in the postseason.
The Lady Knights picked up a close 39-35 win in the regular season finale against Gateway Christian Academy Tuesday night. It was a much-needed win for an SCA team looking to make some noise in the postseason tournament starting next week. Laura Cornette led the way with 16 points, and Heather Pearson added 10 points.
In the last two games, SCA finished 1-1. However, Coach Kristy Patton was happy to see the team finish with a win. She feels the team has made progress each game throughout the season.
“We have improved all along the way,” Patton said. “Going into the tournament, we are confident, and we are ready. I told the girls I am one of those coaches who is never satisfied. We always want to find ways to get better and to continue to keep working, and that’s what we are going to do.”
SCA’s playoffs will likely start with a matchup with Veritas Collegiate Academy. SCA will be the No. 3 seed visiting the No. 2 seed. Veritas has taken the two regular-season matchups. The first meeting was close, with VCA winning 45-38, but the second meeting VCA won 62-33. The Lady Knights know that they can’t go into the third meeting with the mishaps they had in the second meeting.
“Our goal is to finish well,” Patton said. “It’s going to be important for us to finish. Sometimes we do a lot of good things but sometimes don’t put the ball in the basket. It’s going to be important for us to finish.”
