Both the boys’ and girls’ Lakeland High School swim teams placed in the top five of the Class 5 Region A championship meet.
The Cavs competed in the Class 3 Region A meet last week in Newport News and had a strong showing. The boys’ team placed fourth overall, with the girls’ team placing fifth. Coach Cassandra Eagan was highly impressed with how both teams were able to compete.
Senior Corey Hasson took second place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.23 and third place in the 100 backstroke at 1:01.00. Those two times qualified him for the state meet while also breaking the school record in both events. Hasson currently holds the school record for the 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 50 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.
Colton Brown placed second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:00.93, shattering the school record and qualifying for the state meet. Brown also qualified for states in the 500 freestyle, coming in fourth place with a time of 5:53.55. Brown currently holds the most combined points for Lakeland this season.
Brown and Hasson are also a part of a 400 freestyle relay team along with Joshua Arocho Nicholas Jache that will head to the state meet.
Even though the girls’ team finished fifth, they put together 21 of their best times at the regional meet. Myasia Pareno, Brooke Howe, Louise Murray, Kyleigh Hasson and Lisa Stuprich made up two relay teams that placed fifth at the regional meet. The Lady Cavs had an impressive season in which Eagan felt the girls continued to make progress, as they were able to get a meet win over Indian River High School this season.
The Class 3 meet will be held Saturday at The Collegiate School Aquatic Center in Richmond.
