The annual Suffolk City-Wide Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 125 County St.
The annual event is held by the Suffolk City-Wide Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee, which is comprised of the Local 2426 UAW, the Nansemond-Suffolk Branch of the NAACP, the Suffolk Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance and others.
“We’re excited about the celebration and we’re looking forward to have everybody there,” said the committee’s Rev. David Wade.
Congregations will converge for the service with scripture, prayer and worship in King’s honor. The Voices of Norfolk Concert Choir will perform, and the keynote speaker will be the Rev. Dr. Reginald C. Woodhouse of First Baptist Jefferson Park in Newport News.
The Suffolk Community Award will be bestowed on an outstanding individual that has made a difference in the Suffolk community, while the “I Have a Dream” award will be granted to an outstanding organization.
Winners of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Contest will also be recognized. The contest encourages middle and high school students to apply King’s principles to their lives as they reflect on his legacy.
The event is free and open to the public.
