Keep Suffolk Beautiful is calling on all volunteers to donate their time and sweat this Saturday morning to clean up the area surrounding the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.

This Veterans Day cleanup will be from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine, with volunteers meeting just before 9 a.m. at the Lake Prince Boat Ramp at 4324 Lake Prince Drive to sign up and receive safety vests, gloves, grabbers and trash bags.

They will also receive instructions on which part of Lake Prince Drive they are assigned to clean, with different groups tackling different portions of that road, along with other spots in proximity to the cemetery.

This is the first cleanup that Keep Suffolk Beautiful has arranged in honor of Veterans Day, according to Wayne Jones of Suffolk Litter Control and Keep Suffolk Beautiful. A U.S. Navy captain will be present at the beginning to share a few words, before volunteers prepare this part of Suffolk for the friends, families and others that will be at the cemetery on Veterans Day weekend to pay their respects.

“We thought it would be a nice, respectful thing to do ahead of the actual day when friends and family come to visit and pay their respects,” Jones said. “We just want to make sure that area of town looks beautiful.”
