Another year, another bazaar

Members of Providence United Methodist Church will bring back the church’s annual bazaar that’s been going strong for more than 40 years this Saturday.

The fall bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church located at 3109 Providence Road. There will be a country store with assorted canned goodies and cheese, a craft shop with home decorations and potential holiday gifts and another outdoor shop with all kinds of furniture, glassware and decorations.

Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a combo of vegetable beef soup and ham biscuit for $3.

But the biggest draw will once again be the homemade sausage, with hundreds of pounds of Smithfield Foods meat being prepared for the weekend cooking, according to event co-chair Bobbie Cowan.

“On the Friday before the bazaar, all the men get together to cut up and grind up the meat, (then) all the ladies package it, and it’s sold the next day at our bazaar,” Cowan said. “It’s very fresh.”

She said that while the congregation may be fewer in number, the work still continues to keep the fall bazaar busy with customers that will be lined up by 9 a.m. for the annual sausage feast, along with other favorites.

“People just know that they’re going to get that good homemade sausage, country cheese and chicken salad,” she said. “They know it’s a good bazaar, and I think that’s what keeps it going.”
