The African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” continues to hold true for the members of the Suffolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
As mandated by one of their Five Point Programmatic Thrusts — Educational Development — they conducted their annual school supply drive supporting the students in the Suffolk Community during the month of September.
The following schools were selected to receive the school supplies based upon demographics and SOL scores posted by Suffolk Public Schools: Lakeland High School, King’s Fork Middle School, Booker T. Washington Elementary School, Mack Benn Jr. Elementary School and the Suffolk Unit of the Boys and Girls Club, which encompasses all of the students of Suffolk Public Schools. All of the recipients were elated and grateful to receive the school supplies.
The Suffolk Alumnae Chapter also received donations from the Mid-Atlantic Material Test Laboratory of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Code 134. In fact, one of SAC’s very own program planning and development committee members, Camino S. Gibbs, was directly responsible for this partnership.
The school supplies were personally delivered by Kimberly E. Vincent, first vice president, and Beverly Washington-Williams, second vice president, who are also members of the program planning and development committee under the leadership of Tina M. Paul, president of Suffolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.
