Free tire disposal this weekend

Suffolk residents can clean out their houses or donate to a worthy cause on Saturday for Keep Suffolk’s Beautiful’s Recycling and Tire Amnesty Day. Volunteers will collect the items on Saturday in the Lowe’s parking lot at 1216 N. Main St. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“You drive in, drop off your stuff and drive out. Simple as that,” Litter Control Coordinator Wayne Jones said.

Keep Suffolk Beautiful will be working with Goodwill, the Lions Club, the Southeastern Public Service Authority and TFC Recycling to dispose or donate some of the items brought to the recycling drive. This drive is held twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall.

Residents can bring CFL bulbs, batteries, household hazardous waste, eyeglasses, hearing aids, plastic bags, glass containers, electronics, gently used clothing, empty cans and cardboard.

Driver’s licenses will be required to drop off tires and hazardous household waste, as the drive is open only to Suffolk residents. Residents can bring tires that are up to 22 inches in diameter, but the tires cannot have rims attached. Wayne said more than 3,500 tires were collected last year.

Hazardous household waste includes home cleaning products, automotive products, indoor pesticides and paint. Up to 5 liquid gallons will be accepted per party.

Residents can also prevent identity theft by bringing personal documents to be shredded, and Lions Club members will collect old eyeglasses and hearing aids that will be sterilized, repaired and distributed to those that need them. The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia will collect donations of canned food, boxed meals, baby food and wipes.

This is a rain-or-shine event. Visit the Keep Suffolk Beautiful Facebook page for more information. Email littercontrol@suffolkva.us or call 514-7604 for volunteer opportunities and other questions.
