The Cavs football team finally did away with the zero in the win column Friday night with its 37-7 domination of Western Branch High School.
It was a long time coming for a Cavs team with a tough draw for its first four games of the season. However, Lakeland never got down on themselves and was able to get the first one Friday night.
“It feels like getting the monkey off your back,” Coach Kevin Knight said. “All three phases played well — special teams, offense and defense. We are going to enjoy this one.”
Tyquan Holloman and Demonta Hawkins did some good things for Lakeland. Hawkins went more than 100 yards receiving and took a kick return 90-plus yards to the house. Nate Edghill also added a couple of big plays for touchdowns for the Cavs. Tahje Trotter added a touchdown as well.
“We got the tough part out of the way,” Knight said. “Now it’s about stringing along some more of these wins. We’ll continue to believe in these guys. We still got big goals we want to accomplish this season.”
At 1-4, Lakeland will have a tough test for the next game. They will host a Deep Creek High School team that just took its first loss of the season. Lakeland will have to continue making plays in all phases to be able a secure another home win Friday.
