James Leon Skinner Sr.

James Leon Skinner Sr. was born on June 24, 1924, in Suffolk, to the late William and Georgia Skinner. He was also preceded in death by his son, Austin Skinner; brothers: Norwood Skinner, Russo Skinner; and sister, Magadline Skinner.
Deacon Skinner was a World War II honoree, receiving the meritorious unit commendation from Gen. Douglas MacArthur. He received the certificate of distinguished service and was recognized as a Veteran of Foreign Wars.
Deacon joined (New) Paul’s Temple Holiness Church in 1960, where he served as head deacon and trustee. He was known for his servant spirit in the community.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 68 years, Dr. Catherine B. Skinner; six children: three sons, James Skinner Jr. (Trina) and Elton Skinner (Shirley), of Suffolk; Tony Skinner (Erion), of Albuquerque, N.M.; three daughters; Juanita Skinner and Pamela Skinner, of Suffolk, and Marvella Powell (Allen), of Ferris, Texas; two grandchildren raised as daughters: Cassandra Williams and Shameca Golden (Demetrious); a brother; Russell Skinner; two sisters-in law: Gladys Parker and Alma Wright (Raymond), of Suffolk; 23 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
The family will receive guests at 615 Roosevelt Drive, Suffolk. A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018, at New Paul’s Temple Holiness Church. He will be laid to rest in Carver Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum. Professional services with dignity have been entrusted to Crocker Funeral Home Inc.
