An organization committed to supporting and honoring veterans will raise money and honor one of the fallen with a day of good-natured softball.

The Fallen Outdoors will hold its co-ed memorial softball tournament on Aug. 25 at Western Branch Park, 4437 Portsmouth Blvd. in Chesapeake. Festivities will begin at 1 p.m. followed by the start of games at 5 p.m.

Children will enjoy water balloons and LEGOs while the adults try their hands at cornhole beside coolers. There will also be a food tent, bake sale and raffle.

According to Fallen Outdoors Pro-Staff Teri Stanley, the event will be filled with good times among friends, family and anyone else interested in participating. There will also be tents, activities and plenty of grilling, and the games themselves will have their own antics to keep things interesting, Stanley said.

“It’s a way for people to get out and meet other people,” she said. “These kinds of fun tournaments don’t have too much stress, and they’re not super competitive.”

Fallen Outdoors allows veterans to help other veterans by facilitating hunting, fishing and other outdoor excursions to help cope with stressors and any other issues they may be experiencing since they came home from duty. Members of the organization are also committed to helping the family of veterans that have died.

This tournament will memorialize Marine Sgt. Michael Andrew Tooley, who was the victim of a hit-and-run in North Carolina in July 2016, according to a report by Marine Corps Times. He died at the age of 28. Authorities have yet to identify and arrest the responsible party.

Tooley’s family will be present at the event and will throw the evening’s first pitch.

“He was one of us,” Stanley said about Tooley. “He was a military man. He served our country and fought for us to be here. If he was still here, I would be personally grateful to stand right next to him.”

The cost of registration is $225 per team, with at least three female players required for each team. Email terilynnstanley7@outlook.com or call 705-4756 for more information.
